How I wish I could write one of those
Dominik Wagner, one of the minds behind SubEthaEdit, wrote a retrospective on his six years of studying computer science at a german university.
Being in my sixth year myself (but not at one of Germany’s finest universities), I can confirm most of what he says.

What does SubEthaEdit mean? What’s Etha?

I think the term is inspired by Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series of novels, where SubEtha communication is some kind of instantaneous interstellar communication technology. It’s used to update the contents of the eponymous Guide in real time, for example.
Now, SubEthaEdit is a text editor that lets several people edit a file at the same time, so the name fits well. Even though I believe it works only if everybody is located in the same stellar system.
